The Economic Power of Women and You

Globally, women are more economically powerful than ever before. Currently, women control the majority of personal wealth in the United States, own businesses that contribute $3 trillion annually to the economy, and are due to inherit 70% of the $41 trillion in intergenerational wealth transfers in the next 40 years. Despite this financial influence, many women still struggle to express their personal power in the work place. This ambivalence hurts your female clients and you. Unless each of us…See More

Who Decided April was Financial Literacy Month Anyway?

At KBK Wealth Connection, we celebrate Financial Literacy Month every April. This year it struck me that, while I really liked the concept, I did not know the history of the month and how it came to be designated as a month to teach and/or learn more about money and finance. So I asked my trusty assistant to dig up some facts, and here is what she found: 2000: The Jump$tart…See More

The Secret to Successfully Advising Couples

The following is based on the work in my upcoming book, How To Give Financial Advice to Couples: Balancing High-Net-Worth Clients’ Needs, due out September 2013. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments. Enjoy! KBK Over the last decade, there has been a shift in gender roles in families making it no longer a given that the man is the one making and managing the money. In 1970, women in the United States contributed 2 to 6 % of the family income. Now the average American wife…See More

Give Your Clients Red Carpet Service

Sunday is the 85th Oscar Academy Awards, and I am excited to see if Argo wins best picture. Ben being a Beantown guy, I just have to root for him. It is always a guilty pleasure to pour a glass of wine and watch celebrities walk down the red carpet on Oscar night.   Everyone likes to be treated like a celebrity so why not treat your clients to the red carpet treatment every time they interact with you and your firm? As a client-centric advisor, it makes perfect sense and is sure to have a big…See More

Identify Your Biases When Advising Couples

The following is an excerpt from Kathleen Burns Kingsbury's upcoming book, "How to Give Financial Advice to Couples: Balancing Her Needs with His," which will be published by McGraw-Hill in September 2013. Watch for this book to learn more about couples dynamics and advising. As an advisor, you grew up in the same society as your clients; therefore, you have been influenced by many of the same couple and money myths as they have. You are also a product of your upbringing and the couple money…See More

Christmas Movies and Their Money Messages

While decorating the Christmas tree this year, we watched some of the old classic holiday movies. These movies entertain us and warm our hearts, but they also communicate money lessons to be learned in this often too materialistic season. Here are three classic movies and the money message embedded in each:   A Christmas Carol (1938)  There are many remakes of this classic movie, but the original 1938 black and white version remains my favorite. I enjoy watching a tight-fisted Scrooge transform…See More

How to Empower the Non-Dominant Spouse in Financial Meetings

Do you find that you want to hear more from some of your female clients, but find that her partner monopolizes the conversation? This is often a challenge faced by advisors working with older couples, or those couples who believe it is the man’s job to manage the money. While you want to be respectful of what works for each couple, there are strategies you can employ to try to balance the conversation in the meeting.   Strategy #1: The Polite Interruption:If one person is dominating the…See More

Go Buffs! How a College Tour Spurred a Good Money Talk

Recently, I had the opportunity to take my 17-year-old nephew to see the University of Colorado Boulder. Not only was it a great chance to spend some quality time with him, it really helped me understand how financial literacy and planning is so integral to the admissions process. One of my favorite moments was when the admissions counselor put up a slide with the cost of out-of-state tuition. My nephew's eyes got as big as saucers. Before…See More

There's No Such Thing Called "Free" Money

Last week my husband and I hired a painter to put a fresh coat of paint on our hundred-year-old home. True to form, my husband negotiated a good deal and got the contractor down $600. When he told me he saved this amount of money, he immediately started to brainstorm about how we could spend this “free money.” In my mind, our expenses went down $600. In his mind, we won the lottery and had $600 to spend. We laughed as we talked about our different perspectives and how mental accounting and…See More
